According to a recent study, published in The Lancet, H1N1, a.k.a. the swine flu, is responsible for 70 pediatric deaths in the UK between June 2009, and March 2010, which is more deaths in children than caused by leukemia, according to the study’s authors. As reported by this study, the average mortality rate was 6/1,000,000 overall, with the highest rates seen in children of Bangladeshi and Pakistani descent (47/1,000,000 and 36/1,000,000 respectively). Here are some other statistics from the study:

  • 21% of the victims were previously healthy
  • 64% had severe pre-existing disorders
  • the rate was highest for the under 1 age group at 14/1,000,000
  • the rate was lowest for white British children at 4/1,000,000
