Health Day: Flu Hits 90 Million Children Under 5 Each Year

Published in the Nov. 11 online edition of The Lancet, the research also revealed that flu-related pneumonia claimed the lives of up to 111,500 children in 2008. According to the report, 99 percent of these deaths occurred in developing countries. Doctors Without Borders: Somalia Vaccination Campaign Suspended due to Fighting

Flu vaccine for 2011-2012 season approved by the FDA

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) met in February to review data to determine the composition of the 2011-2012 season flu vaccine. Based on this review, the FDA recommended that this upcoming season’s vaccine contain the following three strains: an A/California/7/09 (H1N1)-like virus; * an A/Perth /16/2009 (H3N2)-like virus; a B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus.         *A/California/7/09 (H1N1)-like virus is the pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza virus. This composition is identical to last season’s flu vaccine composition. This might mean that some healthy people may not need to take it this year, if they took last year’s shot. Flu kills 40 in Georgia – The country of Georgia has recorded 40 flu victims this flu season; 29 of the fatalities were due to the swine flu, whereas the other 11 were due to the A and B subtypes. At this time, the vaccination status of the victims is unknown. Measles outbreak in Minnesota – 9 children have been infected with measles with Minnesota all under 4 years of age. Japan panel finds no link to vaccines, deaths: report

Japan will keep its suspension on the use of the vaccines that prevent meningitis and pneumonia, a health ministry official said after the safety panel’s meeting, but declined to comment further. 'Vaccine Epidemic' book launch party invades my alma mater, part 1

On February 18, New York University hosted at Tishman Hall a book launch for Vaccine Epidemic: How Corporate Greed, Biased Science, and Coercive Government Threaten Our Human Rights, Our Health, and Our Children, co-edited by Louise Habakus and Professor Mary Holland. The book was published by Skyhorse Publishing, which also published Andrew Wakefield’s book Callous Disregard: Autism and Vaccines: The Truth Behind a Tragedy last year as well as Kim Stagliano’s recent book All I Can Handle: I’m No Mother Teresa: A Life Raising Three Daughters with Autism. As reported earlier, the US Supreme Court has been hearing a case in which the parents of Hannah Bruesewitz were trying to sue the vaccine maker, Wyeth, for Hannah’s alleged vaccine related injury.  Back then, I took exception to the way the media was reporting on the case, implying that the Supreme Court was hearing a case about the side effects, when in reality what the Supreme Court was trying to decide was the right of individuals to sue a vaccine manufacturer outside of vaccine court. Greek swine flu deaths reach 62 – 14 additional deaths have been recorded in Greece due to swine flu, bringing the total number of fatalities for the country to 62. None of the latest 14 deaths had been vaccinated. Another 223 people with swine flu are in intensive care.
